Strong Second Half Helps Women's Basketball Surge Past McKendree

LEBANON, ILL. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team shot 56 percent from the field in the second half to overcome a 14-point halftime deficit en route to a 69-64 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory Sunday night.
 
Senior Arielle Jackson scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, including 11 in the fourth quarter, while freshman Kiara Stewart recorded her first collegiate double-double with 11points and 13 rebounds.
 
The Tritons shot just 37.5 percent in the opening 20 minutes, while the Bearcats connected at a 51.7 percent clip. McKendree was limited to 32 percent in the second half as UMSL outscored the hosts, 47-28.

How it Happened
McKendree owned an 18-11 lead after the first quarter shooting 63.6 percent, while the Tritons were just 4-of-13 from the field.
 
A 5-0 start to the second quarter and a three-point play by redshirt Laura Szorenyi got UMSL within 18-16, but McKendree answered with nine straight to ignite a 16-4 run to close out the half, taking a 36-22 lead into the break.
 
The Tritons shot 61.5 percent in the third quarter, outscoring the Bearcats, 21-14, to pull within 50-43 heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
UMSL reeled off 10 unanswered points midway through the fourth quarter and took its first lead of the game at 58-56 on an offensive putback by sophomore Alex LaPorta. The Bearcats tied it at 58-58, but would not pull ahead again.
