HUNTSVILLE, ALA., February 10, 2019 – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team was edged twice on the final day of play at the Charger Chillout on Sunday. The Tritons lost a 2-1 decision in eight innings to Delta State before seeing host and No. 11 ranked Alabama-Huntsville rally for a 7-5 victory.
Delta State 2, UMSL 1 (8 inn.)
Delta State (8-2) walked it off with an RBI single in the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule in play.
The Tritons scored in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI double from senior
Chelsea Martinez that scored redshirt junior
Morgan Hill, who reached on a single. Martinez and Hill both finished with two hits.
Senior
Carly Kingery (0-3) took the loss, despite striking out eight and walking just one. She scattered five hits.
No. 11 Alabama Huntsville 7, UMSL 5
UAH (8-4) scored seven unanswered en route to the win, erasing a 5-0 lead built by the Tritons (0-6) through three innings.
Freshman
Anna VanGundy and senior
Lizzy Miller led off the game with back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0, while Martinez added a two-out RBI double in that frame for a 2-0 lead.
UMSL then led off the second inning with another two consecutive hits before junior
Andee Tiffee used an RBI fielder's choice to make it 3-0.
Miller picked up another pair of RBIs in the third with two-out two-run single in the third for the 5-0 advantage.
The Tritons had eight of their 12 hits in the first three innings. Miller finished 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs.
Defensively, UMSL was tagged with two errors, leading to two unearned runs.
