ARKADELPHIA, ARK., February 15, 2019 – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team picked up its first win of the season on Friday as the Tritons defeated Henderson State in its opening game of the Alvy Early Memorial Classic. UMSL then suffered an 8-3 loss to Harding in the nightcap.
UMSL 6, Henderson State 3
UMSL jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with a four-hit, four-run first inning that included a three-run homer off the bat of senior
Chelsea Martinez.
After the Reddies (4-5) got two runs, including one unearned, back in the third, freshman
Corinne Daley knocked out her first collegiate home run to lead off the fifth inning before a Henderson State error made it 6-2.
Inside the Box Score
- Senior Carly Kingery struck out 12 and walked just one, while scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs.
- UMSL recorded nine hits. Daley went 2-for-3, while fellow freshman Anna VanGundy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Harding 8, UMSL 3
Freshman
Hayli Richards delivered her first collegiate home run in the first inning with two outs for the early lead, but Harding (5-2) countered with four runs on four hits in the bottom half of the frame and extended its advantage to 7-1 in the fourth on a three-run homer.
Junior
Andee Tiffee recorded her first long ball of the year in a two run shot in the top of the fifth to bring UMSL within 7-3.
Inside the Box Score
- UMSL finished with seven hits, while Harding had nine.
- Richards recorded two hits.
- Tiffee tossed three innings in relief, striking out five and scattering just two hits.
