JOPLIN, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team came up short twice on Thursday as they closed out play at the MIAA-GLVC Challenge, hosted by Missouri Southern. The Tritons suffered a 10-7 loss to the hosts and were edged by Washburn, 7-6, in the finale.
Missouri Southern 10, UMSL 7
Junior Andrew Hayden went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs to lead the Tritons offense, which had 10 hits.
Hayden delivered a solo home run and also reached base on a walk.
Missouri Southern (6-3) used a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to build a 7-1 lead after they had scored two runs each in the second and fourth frames.
UMSL got on the board in the fourth inning, trimming the 2-0 deficit in half, courtesy of a two-out Lions error.
A two-out RBI triple from redshirt senior Brian Seymour in the top of the sixth made it 7-4 before another MSSU error made it 7-5.
However, the Lions countered in the bottom of that frame with a two-run homer and a two-out error by the Tritons to stretch the advantage to 10-5.
After Hayden's homer in the seventh, senior Tom DeCero drove in a run with an RBI single in the eighth for the final score.
