Softball Opens Season With Pair of Losses

HUNTSVILLE, ALA., February 8, 2019 – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team opened its 2019 season on Friday at the Charger Chillout, hosted by Alabama-Huntsville, with losses to West Liberty (3-1) and Mississippi College (4-2).
 
Game 1: West Liberty 3, UMSL 1
Back-to-back two-out hits, including an RBI double, gave the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead in the first.
 
West Liberty made it 3-0 in the fourth, while the Tritons got one run back in the bottom of the frame for the final score. Senior Madi Sundling drove in pinch runner Morgan Skyles with a one-out double to right field.
 
West Liberty had five hits to the Tritons' three, while UMSL was also plagued with three errors and 14 strikeouts.
 
In addition to Sundling's double, senior Chelsea Martinez also had a two-bagger.
 
Senior Carly Kingery struck out six despite the loss, in which she allowed all five hits and three runs in five innings of work. Junior Andee Tiffee tossed two scoreless innings, allowing just two base runners via the walk.
 
Game 2: Mississippi College 4, UMSL 2
UMSL nearly battled back from a 4-0 deficit, scoring both of its runs in the top of the seventh and bringing the game-winning run to the plate, but lined out to end the game.
 
The Tritons had three of their seven hits in the seventh, including an RBI double from senior Reagan Osborn that made it 4-2. UMSL's first run came on a sac fly from freshman Anna VanGundy.
 
Senior Lizzy Miller finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
 
Freshman Mimi Bradley suffered the loss in her first collegiate start, working six innings. She struck out five, walked three and allowed four hits.

UMSL will face No. 13 Young Harris at 11 a.m. and Trevecca Nazarene at 1 p.m. tomorrow as play continues at the Charger Chillout.
