Softball Tops No. 14 GVSU in Two-Win Day to End Florida Trip

CLERMONT, FLA. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team concluded its eight game trip to Florida with two wins on Monday morning, including a 2-1 upset of No. 14 Grand Valley State. The Tritons, winners of four straight, began the morning with a 6-0 win over Assumption.

Game 1: UMSL 6, Assumption 0

Records: UMSL (8-11), Assumption (2-1)

After being no-hit through five innings, the Tritons busted out for six runs on seven hits in the sixth inning. Senior Reagan Osborn led the frame off with a triple, while freshmen Anna VanGundy and Sara Fredrickson each had RBI singles and seniors Chelsea Martinez and Carly Kingery each had two-run doubles.

The Tritons finished with nine hits – all by nine different players.

Kingery (5-6) picked up her third straight win in the circle and her second shutout of the season, tossing the complete game four-hitter. She struck out seven and walked two.

Game 2: UMSL 2, No. 14 Grand Valley State 1

Records:
UMSL (9-11), Grand Valley State (6-2)

Junior hurler Andee Tiffee stymied the Lakers offense, limiting GVSU to a season-low two hits. The Lakers entered the game hitting .339 as a team.

Lydia Goble led off the game with a solo home run for GVSU and after a walk to the number two hitter, Tiffee retired 16 of the next 17 batters she faced before a two-out triple in the sixth. However, she induced an inning ending ground out to end the threat.

Tiffee struck out 10 and walked three.

Offensively, the Tritons tallied five hits and got a one-out two-run double off the bat of redshirt junior Morgan Hill in the bottom of the fourth for the 2-1 lead. Those runs snapped a three-game shutout streak by Grand Valley State, which had not allowed a run in five of its previous seven games.

Martinez finished with two hits.
