Women's Basketball Fends Off Quincy for Fourth Straight Win

QUINCY, ILL. – Redshirt senior Laura Szorenyi and junior Alex LaPorta combined for 39 points Thursday night to lead the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team to its fourth straight win with a 61-56 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Quincy.
 
Szorenyi scored a game-high 20 points, while LaPorta notched her third straight and seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
 
UMSL overcame 19 turnovers and 33.9 percent shooting by holding a 44-25 rebounding advantage, including a 19-6 edge on the offensive end.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons led by as many as 12 before having to fend off the Hawks to secure the win.
 
UMSL closed the first quarter with a 14-3 run, ignited by 12 straight, to take a 22-11 lead. The Tritons made 4-of-5 field goals during that run, including both three-pointers.
 
Quincy outscored UMSL, 21-13, in the second quarter to pull within 35-32 at the break, erasing a 12-point lead by the Tritons at 26-14 with 6:11 to play.
 
The Hawks tied the game at 37-37 early in the third quarter before six unanswered by UMSL ended the frame, giving the Tritons a 51-43 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
Quincy got within three at 55-52 with just over two minutes remaining, but would get no closer.  
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sophomore McKenzie Lathrom notched her third straight game in double figures off the bench, finishing with 10.
  • Junior Danielle Berry equaled her career-high 11 rebounds, while also adding four assists and two steals.
  • UMSL was 17-of-20 at the free-throw line, which included 4-of-4 in the final 23 seconds.
  • Quincy shot 40.7 percent.
