TOPEKA, KAN. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit en route to earning a 5-4 eight-inning win over Central Missouri on the final day of the Washburn Invitational on Sunday. The Tritons began the day with a 7-4 loss to Nebraska-Kearney.
GAME 1: Nebraska-Kearney 7, UMSL 4
Two errors plagued the Tritons, who allowed just three earned runs. Two of those miscues came in the sixth, which led to four runs with two outs to extend Nebraska-Kearney's (10-10) lead to 7-2.
UMSL got two runs back in the seventh, including one on a sac fly from freshman
Irene Travis and one on an RBI single from sophomore
Ali Schoon.
Senior
Andee Tiffee finished 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in the Tritons' second run of the game in the fourth on a single. She was tagged with the loss in the circle despite striking out 11. Tiffee scattered 11 hits and walked two.
Freshman
Annie Scaramuzzi added two hits for UMSL, which tallied nine as a team and left 11 runners on base.
GAME 2: UMSL 5, Central Missouri 4 (8 inn.)
The Tritons scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extra innings. UMSL recorded four hits in that seventh inning – all doubles – with sophomores
Ali Schoon and
Corinne Daley and freshman
McKenzie Lamos all driving in runs. Lamos' came with two outs.
With the international tie breaker rule in place in the eighth, Central Missouri (7-2) scored on a sac fly before the Tritons got singles from freshmen
Annie Scaramuzzi and
Morgan Barnoski to load the bases for sophomore
Jessica Mrzlak who delivered a two-run single up the middle.
UMSL finished with 13 hits, including three each from Lamos and Barnoski.
Sophomore
Mimi Bradley earned the win in one inning of relief, while Tiffee went seven innings in the no-decision start.
