Women's Basketball Falls Short at Lewis After Erasing 19-Point Deficit

ROMEOVILLE, ILL. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team had a three-game win streak snapped on Tuesday with an 87-85 loss at Lewis in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
UMSL erased a 19-point deficit, tying the game at 85-85 on a basket from senior Alex LaPorta with four seconds to play, but the Flyers would score the game-winner at the buzzer.
 
The Tritons were plagued by a season-high 21 turnovers and left 12 points at the free-throw line, going 21-of-33 at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Lewis shot a season-high 50.8 percent and made 11-of-26 three-pointers.
 
Despite the loss, UMSL owned a commanding 44-28 rebounding advantage, including a 21-7 advantage on the offensive end.  
 
LaPorta pulled down 16 boards, while also scoring a game-high 26 points, 24 of which came in the second half, and had four assists.
 
Junior Kiara Stewart also notched a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis' press and trap defense caused havoc for the Tritons from the tip with the Flyers forcing UMSL into seven turnovers in the opening 10 minutes to help take a 26-14 lead after the first quarter.
 
Lewis upped its advantage to 45-29 at the half, while the Tritons got within 11 at the end of the third quarter, 65-54, as freshman Azaria Hulbert just beat the buzzer with a lay in from down the middle of the lane.
 
Senior Danielle Berry opened the final frame with a three-pointer to put the deficit into single digits at 65-57 for the first time since early in the first quarter to help UMSL chisel away.

  • UMSL finished the game shooting 43.3 percent, including 51.3 percent in the second half.
  • Berry added 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • Junior Faye Meissner finished with 11 points and three steals.
  • UMSL outscored the Flyers, 28-10, in second chance points.
