Women's Basketball Rides Fast Start to Win Over Indianapolis

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team took advantage of a quick start to post a 75-57 win over visiting Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
UMSL raced out to an 11-0 lead and held UIndy scoreless through the first five minutes and 36 seconds. The Tritons led 22-7 after the first quarter and took a 50-26 lead into halftime. UMSL shot 67.7 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
 
The win snapped UIndy's four-game win streak.
 
Senior Alex LaPorta scored a game-high 23 points, notching her fifth 20-plus scoring game this season, including her fourth in the last five games, while junior Kiara Stewart equaled a career-high with 20 points and recorded her fourth double-double of the year by adding 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UMSL finished the game shooting 47.6 percent and held a 38-24 rebounding advantage, including a 15-5 edge on the offensive end. The Tritons also capitalized on 12 Greyhound turnovers, outscoring their opponents, 21-7, in points off turnovers.
 
UIndy did make its first five field goals to open the third quarter with a 13-2 run, while UMSL was just 1-of-7 from the floor through the first 3:11. The Tritons took a 60-44 lead into the final quarter.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Faye Meissner added nine points, while freshman Azaria Hulbert added eight points in her first career start.
  • Senior Danielle Berry also scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds to go with five assists and four steals.
 
UP NEXT
UMSL continues its current three-game home stand on Tuesday, hosting Southwest Baptist at 1 p.m.
