UMSL head coach Tony Fernandez said he liked what he saw, and that the dividends are already providing a return on the athletes' investments: hard training.
"We came off a hard week of training and competing in our Red & Gold competitions last week. The swimmers showed up to the meet and showed a lot of competitive spirit, he said. "We had great energy and focus the whole meet. It was encouraging to see them step up and race some of the top schools in the state and in our conference."
Both teams exhibited strong, early performances, which can sometimes be an arduous task, especially for the newcomers.
Added Hernandez: "The women have some really talented freshmen who were super excited to race their first college meet. They were big on relays and providing depth in a lot of events. The men's relays were very strong. We have had a strong core with them the past three years, so they brought a lot of experience for the rest of our team."

Rebecca Bechtel placed 10th with her time of 5:21.47.
