ST.LOUIS, Mo. -- Weekend rainstorms forced a venue change Sunday for the UMSL women's soccer team.
The GLVC tilt was moved to Lou Fusz Soccer Complex, where the Tritons hit the pitch against the Lindenwood Lions, besting the opposition, 2-1.
"Definitely a crucial win for the team as we try to make a postseason push. I thought we maintained possession well and put ourselves in position to score multiple times against a very solid back line," UMSL head coach
Maddi Moon said.
UMSL wasted little time in owning possession and striking first, as
Maya Ware fed
Ayana Weissenfluh, who found the net just 1:56 into the contest -- not only giving the Tritons the early momentum but a little confidence for the duration.
" I thought Ayana getting on the end of Maya's cross for the first goal was really exciting to see because we had been working with that all week and we were able to execute it," added Moon.
The rest of the first half remained scoreless as the teams headed to halftime.
Later, Weissenfluh thought she would reciprocate the favor, feeding
Peyton McNabb, who drilled the shot inside the left post just 8:03 into the second half.
The Tritons exhibited solid runs and spacing, utilized great field vision, and kept pushing the defense back on its heels for most of the matinee.
The Lions capitalized with 6:37 remaining in the match when Morgan Weller assisted Mia Corrigan, as the low-drive shot found the net.
The win pushes the Tritons to 7-6-2 overall and 5-5-2 in GLVC play.
The Tritons are off until Friday, when they host Southern Indiana.
Southern Indy and Mckendree, these are probably two of the most athletic teams in the conference, so we will start game planning tomorrow," Moon said.
