Tritons go back-and-forth, drop opener at Grand Valley State

The UMSL Tritons dropped their season opener Friday evening at Grand Valley State University, 61-54.

While the outcome was not what the Tritons nor head coach Katie Vaughn had envisioned, the physical, hard-fought contest provided plenty of positives as the team has a quick turnaround.

"I am really proud of how extremely hard we played. We did  a lot of good things to put us in a position to win.  We won a lot of categories but unfortunately we  just didn't knock down shots on the road.  It was a great first game and looking forward to our next opportunity," Vaughn said.

The Tritons play at Davenport (Grand Rapids, Mi.) at noon Saturday (CST).

Against Grand Valley, the Tritons trailed 34-27 at halftime, and the game included three lead changes and was tied at four junctures.

In the third, UMSL outscored the Lakers, 15-12. The scores were reversed in the fourth.

Faye Meissner led all Tritons in scoring with her 13-point performance. Kiara Stewart added 11.

Taylor Thompson had eight and Alex LaPorta added seven. Shania Liburd had six.

Danielle Berry tossed in four and Jalysa Stokes had three.
