When playing the UMSL volleyball team, it truly is pick your poison.
On whom do you turn your focus?
Charlotte Richards?
Megan Woll?
Kaileen Herman?
Paige Yoder?
Mya Elliott?
It is a tough task, and not many have found success in such a game plan.
But the Tritons found success Saturday, sweeping Southern Indiana, 25-11, 25-17, 25-15 -- advancing to the GLVC championship tilt against Lewis.
This marks the 21st time the Tritons have appeared in the postseason tournament.
While it is a new season, the win tosses some retribution into the equation as the then-24th ranked Southern Indiana defeated UMSL, 3-0, in the spring season's GLVC semifinals.
The Tritons previously lost two matches to Southern Indiana earlier this season, and as the adage goes, it's tough to beat the same team twice, let alone three times in the same sports calendar year.
Mission accomplished for the Tritons.
Yesterday, the Tritons swept the University of Illinois Springfield.
It took UMSL a bit to get going, but once they did, the pedal was floored.
"Yeah, any time you are in the first set of the tournament, there are some nerves. Then we went on a 4-2 or a 4-1 run. And then in set two, I said: 'We have to clean our free ball situations. We have been serving well, which has been a huge thing for us, serving and passing well,'" head coach
Ryan Young said. "We were just a lot cleaner. Offensively, we hit .350 yesterday and .358 today. I think our serving helped out big time."
On Saturday, the Tritons smashed their way to .429 set percentage, as Herman tallied 43 assists. The team served .878.
The match only had one lead change (third set) and included seven ties.
Yesterday, Elliott was a force above the net. Today, it was Yoder and Richards. Just another equal-opportunity day for Young and his Tritons.
Young said depth and versatility and not being a one-sided attacking team has been crucial to the team's success the past few seasons.
The offense lives and breathes through Herman's play.
"Yeah, she is a consistent setter. She has been the last three seasons for us," Young said. "We just pass well. We are not a one-trick pony where we we set outside to Charlotte every time. There have been matches where she swung at 80 balls. You cannot rely on one kid in this league when you play good teams. We pass well so Kaileen was able to get the ball to the middle a lot, to the right side. They were pretty efficient."
UMSL faces Lewis at 12 p.m. Sunday for the conference title.
