ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Tritons used another strong second quarter Wednesday to key their 65-55 win against visiting Trevecca Nazarene.
Alex LaPorta and
Danielle Berry both notched double digits, scoring 18 points each.
After a close back-and-forth for the first 10 minutes of action, the Tritons settled into a rhythm in the second, taking the 34-27 lead to the locker room at halftime.
"It is definitely a swing in the game whenever you can go in at halftime feeling good about your shots," LaPorta said. "Being able to knock down shots and get good looks, so I think we used that to go into our second half these past couple games. ]We've] built on it and found each other for good looks."
The game was one of a scrappy nature, as the interior game became more integral.
Faye Meissner kept the Trojans honest with her presence from the outside, as well as her dribble penetration past the Trojans' guards, which opened up LaPorta's play down in the paint.
Collectively, the Tritons finished with 30 points in the paint, more than doubling that of the Trojans.
"Whoever is hot, just feed them. Just keep going that way," LaPorta said.
Patience and whip around passing leads to greater shot selections, which also became more paramount throughout the final three quarters.
"We never really got into as much of an offensive rhythm as we would have liked to, just because of the way they were switching up their defenses, [their] schemes," LaPorta said. "We were able to hit shots, and that is all you can ask for on your home court. Just really had to grind out the whole thing. We just grinded it out."
Heading into the holiday, the Tritons -- after starting the season 0-1 -- have back-to-back-to-back wins.
The saying that it is game by game is cliche, but for LaPorta and company, that is the mindset heading into next week -- where they will log some miles for the first time since the Nov. 12 season opener at Grand Valley State (Mich.).
Their first one is at Quincy, a conference opponent, Monday evening.
"We have three games next week on the road, which are all going to be huge. If we can start conference strong, that really is what ... conference is going to be super important, obviously," LaPorta said. "We are just going game by game. We always have to work really hard whenever we have to go up to Quincy, just because they are a scrappy team."
Against Trevecca: the Tritons shot 43 percent from the field, 50 percent from beyond the arc, and knocked down 67 percent of their shots from the charity stripe.
