Tritons top UIndy, move to 19-6 overall

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The UMSL Tritons took care of business once again.

THe Tritons bested the UIndy Greyhounds 25-17, 25-14, 24-26, 28-26 Friday evening on Chuck Smith Court.

The Tritons move to 19-6 on the season. Head coach Ryan Young is one win shy of 200 and Kaileen Herman is closing in on 3,000 career assists.

Herman said she prefers getting right back onto the floor after such an atypical night.

"I take away that our team put in a great fight tonight. Indy is a great team that is hot and cold and they can turn it on and off really easily," Herman said. "They turned it on those last two sets. They played a great match. It was really encouraging to see how hard we fought at the end, especially having them come back that closely, and pushing through the adversity. To pull out the win is really nice."

The game plan was simplistic: own transition!

"They scheme a lot. They are a very smart team. Their coach is smart," Herman said. "We wanted to do our best, honestly, to just put down balls. We both are very defensive-oriented teams. Obviously, we both had a lot of digs tonight. The biggest thing we wanted to do was make a lot of plays and put down balls in transition because we knew they were going to make plays, too."

The UMSL women have logged nearly as many miles as a baseball farm club, so having back-to-back matches at home ... sleeping in their own beds ... is almost unfamiliar territory.

"It is always nice to be home," Herman said, grinning from ear to ear. "October was a really tough month. It is nice to know we will be on our court tomorrow."

In the opening set, Paige Yoder had two early kills as the Tritons set the tone, taking the 6-2 lead.

The Greyhounds stormed back, tying it up 8 apiece, until a service error altered the tide. The Tritons added consecutive points, and Charlotte Richards extended the lead with her patent authoritative attack.

But UIndy stayed with the Tritons, as the teams countered each other like a prize fight. UMSL extended the lead to 19-15 late in the match, and UIndy head coach Jason Reed called for the timeout.

The Tritons closed it out on a six-two run as Yoder and Richards drilled uncontested shots. Richards closed it out with a set-clinching attack.

The Greyhounds responded wth the early 5-1 lead to commence the second set. UMSL outscored the opposition six to two to get back in it. A quick service error by UIndy and a trickling ball over the net put the Tritons up 9-8.

A long volley tied it at 11, before Richards put the team back up 13-11. UMSL continued its dominance as it went up 17-13. Reed had seen enough, as he called for another timeout, and the Tritons closed it out on a 8-1 run.

In the third set, Olivia Klank authored a vital cross-court kill to give the Tritons the early 5-2 lead. The teams countered one another en route to the 11-11 tie. UIndy pulled away, 17-13, and Young called for the timeout.

THe Greyhounds extended the lead to 20-16, but Richards's consecutive kills put the Tritons back in it, as they trailed 21-19.

Reed, once again, called for the timeout.

Klank's attack kept the momentum for the Tritons, as strong front line play tied it at 21, and the Tritons' student section made their presence known.

UMSL took the lead, 22-21, but UIndy pulled out the win, 26-24.

The Tritons had seen enough as they cruised ... momentarily, up 24-17, in the fourth set.

But the Greyhounds responded with six-straight points, and Young called for two late timeouts.

Tied at 24, it was anyone's set.

More strong front-line play by Richards and Herman gave the Tritons the 25-24 match-point lead.

The Greyhounds found a hole in the middle of the defense, tied 25-25.

Then tied at 26.

Yoder put the Tritons up by one.

Match point again, and Yoder capped off the match with her attack.

UMSL is back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday against Lewis University.
