ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Tritons (19-7, 12-3) were at home again Saturday as the Lewis University Flyers were in town as the regular-season draws to a close next Saturday.
The Flyers bested the Tritons, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-12.
With the win, the Flyers are the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament.
The Tritons set the tempo with the 25-21 opening-set win. An element that was crucial against a team as powerful as the Flyers, but the volleyball dieties had other plans.
The Flyers entered the matinee sporting a 20-6 record -- including 14-1 in the GLVC. Lewis clinched the GLVC East Division crown in their previous match against Truman State.
The Tritons came up short for just their seventh loss of the season.
In the opening set: both teams circled the wagons. Point by point, kill by kill.
Kaileen Herman's kill tied up the match, 6-6, in the early going ... and then 8-8.
Charlotte Richards' kill tied it up at 10.
Paige Yoder picked up where she left off Friday, asserting herself on the defensive end, but a strong, looming prowess up front equated to issues,
The Tritons battled some height on the front line, especially No. 27, Ava Venema -- who stands 6'2" tall.
The combo of Juliana Van Loo and Venema gave the Flyers the leg up throughout the match.
Down 15-11, UMSL head coach
Ryan Young didn't hesitate, calling for the timeout. UMSL came out swinging, netting consecutive points afterward, including a Lexi Rang kill.
UMSL authored a 5-2 run during the span.
Up one point, 21-20, Richards connected for the ace.
Lewis, though, stood tall, until Klank's kill forced the Flyers to call for the timeout, as the Tritons owned the 23-21 lead and closed out the final two points of the set.
In the second: Lewis was dazed but looked to even the score.
The set paralleled the first, with both teams countering and matching, point by point. Richards took over in the early going, coming up with multiple kills, assisted by, of course,
Kaileen Herman, who inched even closer to 3,000 career assists.
Herman has three remaining matches and needs 59 assists to hit the plateau.
Richards put up the Tritons 8-6 with another kill to the right side of the defense. Yoder extended the lead to 9-6. The Flyers responded with a 3-0 run to knot it up once again, but Richards found a soft spot in the defense for another Triton point.
With the Flyers up 14-11, Young called timeout.
The Flyers continued its dominance, taking the set, 25-16.
In the third: Lewis mixed the arsenal, going up 6-2.
The ball continued to split the UMSL defense, as the Flyers maintained the three-point differential, 11-8, followed by a service ace. Lewis extended the lead to 13-8, and Young called for the timeout.
The Flyers produced the 12-9 run to close out the set.
In the fourth set, the Tritons did all they could, mixing up their attacks and engaging in long volleys.
But the Flyers' front line simply was too much on this day.
The Tritons travel to Lindenwood Tuesday for their last road match of the season.
UMSL returns home Friday and Saturday to battle Maryville and Truman State, respectively.
