The UMSL women's basketball team showed resolve, desire, and maturation Saturday afternoon at Lindenwood.
The Tritons, playing without
Kiara Stewart for nearly seven minutes in overtime, stayed true to form in their 80-76 double overtime win at Lindenwood.
The win pushes the Tritons to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in GLVC play.
The Lions thought they had the game sealed, 67-65, at the end of the first overtime on Mary McGrath's five-footer off the inbounds, but after an official timeout, replay showed the game clock had expired just prior to the delivery.
The Tritons proceeded to open the final five minutes of play on a 9-2 run, and sound defense balanced their efforts in the win, as did
Danielle Berry's effectiveness from the charity stripe as the senior went 4-for-4 down the stretch.
To start the second overtime period, the Lions went to their patent back-door cut to take the 67-65 lead.
Shania Liburd, in for Stewart, found
Alex LaPorta for the deuce.
Mallory Ronshausen then scored via dribble penetration, and Berry closed in on the double team as the Tritons defense forced the Lions turnover.
Liburd cut across the lane to the far side, scoring just beyond the block and using the glass for some touch.
Ronshausen sized up her shot and knocked down another 3-pointer, and the Tritons found themselves up 74-67.
The Lions hit their long-range shot, and the Tritons turned over the rock on the inbounds play --their 14th turnover of the game -- a credit to the Lions' defensive attack.
The Tritons defense responded in kind, forcing a Lions turnover, and Berry knocked down a pair from the line as the Tritons went up six points, 76-70.
Berry knocked down two more from the line and the Tritons closed out the road win.
Ronshausen led the Tritons with 19 points and Stewart followed that up with 17 (fouled out late in the first overtime period).
LaPorta tossed in 14 and Berry tallied 12 (shot 90 percent from the line).
UMSL wrapped up a three-game road trip this week with wins over Quincy (61-47) and Truman State (57-54) and Lindenwood.
The Tritons will hop on the bus next week as they head to Memphis, Tenn., to battle Christian Brothers University at 5 p.m. Thursday.
