Softball Splits With Lewis to Open GLVC Play

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a split against visiting Lewis on Saturday with each team claiming a one-run win. The Flyers took the opener, 2-1, while the Tritons won the nightcap, 3-2, thanks to a three-run homer from junior Corinne Daley.

Game 1: Lewis 2, UMSL 1
After being held without a hit through the first three innings, sophomore Jenna Towle led off the fourth with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
 
The Flyers would score the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning.
 
UMSL recorded six hits and drew three walks, while leaving nine on base. Junior Jessica Mrzlak tallied two hits.
 
Towle scattered nine hits, struck out five and walked just one despite the loss.
 
Game 2: UMSL 3, Lewis 2
The Flyers also scored both of their runs on a long ball in the fifth inning.
 
Towle led off the sixth inning with a walk, while sophomore Irene Travis reached on a single to put two on for Daley, who delivered her first round tripper of the season.
 
Travis and sophomore Annie Scaramuzzi had two hits each to combine for four of UMSL's six hits.
 
Junior Mimi Bradley improved to 4-2 in the circle with the complete game effort. She scattered six hits and struck out three.
 
Up Next
UMSL will host Illinois Springfield at Noon tomorrow in a doubleheader.
