Women's Basketball Hangs on for Win at Lewis in GLVC Quarterfinals

ROMEOVILLE, ILL. – Survive and advance.
 
The No. 5 seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team held on for a 69-67 victory at No. 4 seeded Lewis on Wednesday night in quarterfinal round action of the 2021 GLVC Basketball Tournament.
 
The Flyers rallied back from a 16-point deficit and had a chance to send the game to overtime with 0.8 seconds on the clock as they were fouled on a three-point shot in the final second, but made just 1-of-3, allowing the Tritons to hold on.
 
UMSL improves to 12-7 and advances to Saturday's semifinal at top-seeded Drury at 12 p.m. Lewis ends its season at 13-9.
 
How It Happened
UMSL shot 60 percent in the first half, which included making 9-of-12 field goals in the second half, en route to claiming a 39-24 halftime lead.
 
The Tritons then took a 56-44 lead into the final 10 minutes, but were just 2-of-10 from the field in that frame, allowing the Flyers to chip away. After a jumper by freshman Azaria Hulbert made it 60-49, Lewis used an 11-3 run to pull within 63-60 with 1:33 to play.
 
UMSL made all six free throws in the final 70 seconds, including two by Hulbert with 12 seconds on the clock for the 69-66 lead.  
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Senior Danielle Berry scored a season-high 16 points to go with five assists and two steals.
  • Junior Faye Meissner added 13 points, while junior Kiara Stewart also scored 13 points, while tying a career-high with 17 rebounds.
  • Hulbert finished with 10 points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals.
  • Senior Alex LaPorta was held to six points on six attempts – just the second time this season she didn't score in double figures. She added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
  • UMSL shot 48.9 percent and held a 37-26 rebounding advantage, while Lewis shot 38.2 percent.
