EVANSVILLE, IND. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team split their first day of matches at the Southern Indiana Tournament on Friday. UMSL won their first match against Wayne State University, 3-1. The Tritons fell to host institution, the University of Southern Indiana in the afternoon.
UMSL (2-3) won their first two sets against Wayne State (4-1) in convincing fashion. A pair of four-point runs helped the Tritons to a 25-17 first set win. UMSL followed with a 25-15 win in set two.
The Warriors led the Tritons 23-15 at one point in set three. UMSL rattled off six straight points to come within two points of tying the set. Wayne State managed to finish off the set 25-22.
The Tritons carried their late momentum into set four. UMSL led 11-7 when the Tritons scored the next nine points including two aces from
Kaileen Herman. UMSL went on to win 25-15 and take the match 3-1.
The Tritons had nine aces in the match.
Charlotte Richards and Alexa Rang each had three aces. Herman had two aces. Richards finished with 20 kills and 10 digs.
Karlyn Hannewald had 13 kills and
Olivia Klank recorded 10 kills. Herman set 45 assists and added 12 digs.
Megan Woll led the defense with 21 digs.
The Tritons stumbled at the start of the second match of the day. Southern Indiana took the first two sets 25-14 and 25-12 respectively.
UMSL regrouped in set three and put together a four-point run and two five-point runs to claim the set 25-19. In the fourth set, the Tritons jumped out to an early five-point lead, but USI chipped away to overtake UMSL and earn a 25-23 set win to finish the match.
Charlotte Richards notched her second double-double of the tournament with 13 kills and 18 digs.
Megan Woll finished with 14 digs.
Delaney Humm also recorded double-digit digs with 10.
Karli Dean finished with eight kills.
Kaileen Herman finished with 16 assists.
Leah Luchinski set 10 assists.
The Tritons will take to the court tomorrow for their final two matches of the Southern Indiana Tournament. UMSL will face the University of Alabama Hunstville at 10 a.m. followed by a match against Davis & Elkins at 4:15 p.m.
