ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The UMSL Tritons faced both a zone and man defense Saturday afternoon at Chuck Smith Court.
The Missouri S&T Miners threw the house at the Tritons, but the UMSL men would not be swayed as they notched their 10th win of the season in the 83-72 final.
It was a relatively back-and-forth first half, as teams countered the other's attack, as UMSL extended its lead to 44-33 intermission.
Kellen King exhibited strong court vision, finding multiple shooters -- one of whom was
Trever Moore -- who knocked down his first 3-pointer roughly 10 minutes into regulation.
In pure UMSL fashion, the paint was a vital factor in the win, as the Tritons converted 36 points and added 10 second-chance opportunities.
Rotations were just as paramount as the bench netted 26 points to the Miners' 17. On the turnover front, he Tritons coughed up the rock 14 times to the Miners' five.
For the game, the Tritons shot 52 percent from the field and 86 percent (6-of-7) from the charity stripe. UMSL took advantage of the clock stoppages in an effort to create the needed seperation.
With the win, UMSL improves to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the GLVC. Currently, the Tritons are just behind Truman State for first place in the GLVC Central Division.
UMSL now hits the road for three straight, beginning with Lewis Jan. 13; Illinois Springfield Jan. 15; and Indianapolis Jan.17.
Mark your calendars, though, as the Tritons are back home and host Truman State Jan. 20.
