ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team ran into the hottest team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference on Friday as the University of Indianapolis picked up a 5-1 win at Don Dallas Field. The Tritons drop to 4-8-3, 3-6-2 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 9-2-3, 7-2-2 GLVC.
Despite the loss, UMSL still has a chance at making the GLVC Tournament but will need to beat McKendree on Sunday and get some help. The Tritons have 11 points and trail Truman State and Missouri S&T by two points heading into Sunday's contests. Five teams are battling for the final two playoff spots.
UIndy outshot UMSL 6-5 in the first 45 minutes but it was the Tritons putting three of their shots on goal compared to one for the Greyhounds.
UMSL's best chance came in the seventh minute as
Tommy Naumann tried to slip one inside the post but Joey Schrand was there to make the save.
Arman Kovac had an opportunity in the 23rd minute that was saved by Schrand and
Leo Sowa had a chance with 10:43 remaining in the half.
UIndy broke the scoreless deadlock nine minutes into the second half winning a throw in deep in UMSL's end. Caleb Mundell threw the ball into the box and Bryan Moreira was able to head it past
Austin Reis for his second goal of the season.
The Greyhounds added a second goal in the 67th minute as Moreira crossed a ball into the box to Cole Rainwater who scored for his second goal of the season.
The Tritons cut the Hounds lead in half with about 15 minutes to play.
Jack Meuse served a corner kick into the box that was played back out to him. He served it in again and Naumann was able head it past Schrand for his second goal of the season.
UIndy scored 1:43 later to regain its two-goal lead as Moreira took a shot that was blocked but stayed with it and scored on the rebound for his second of the night.
The Greyhounds added two more goals in the span of 4:20 to put the game away. Rainwater scored his second of the contest at the 78:01 mark from Ibo Yilmaz and Yilmaz got in the action in the 83rd minute scoring his sixth goal of the season with an assist from Rainwater.
UIndy outshot UMSL 18-8 in the contest including 7-5 in shots on goal. The Hounds also had a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tritons wrap up their regular season on Sunday hosting McKendree at 2:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field. The team will honor its seven seniors before the contest.
