SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team came up short in its 2-1 loss against Drury at Harrison Stadium on Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Mo. The Tritons drop to 4-7-2, 3-5-1 GLVC while the Panthers improve to 6-1-5, 4-0-4 GLVC.
Drury scored the only goal of the opening half in the 10th minute. Kaelen Debbage scored on a shot from the edge of the six-yard box into the lower right corner with an assist from Jamie O'Brien.
The Panthers outshot UMSL 7-3 in the first 45 minutes including 2-1 in shots on goal. Drury had the only two corner kicks.
The Tritons got the equalizer early in the second half.
Gabe Stanislawski tried to drive around Mason Booth in the penalty area but Booth pulled him down in the box setting up a penalty kick.
Leo Sowa took the penalty kick but his attempt hit off the left post, bounced back to him and he scored on the rebound for his sixth goal of the season.
The Panthers retook the lead less than three minutes later as
Owen Sears was called for foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick for Drury. O'Brien stepped to the spot and beat
Austin Reis to the upper right corner for the game-winner.
UMSL had a couple of chances on free kicks from the edge of the penalty area to tie the game but both attempts were blocked by the Panther defense.
Drury finished the contest with 17-8 advantage in shots including 5-3 in shots on goal. The Panthers had six corner kicks in the contest. Sowa led the Tritons with three shots on goal and Reis made three saves.
UMSL concludes its three-game road trip next Friday (Oct. 14) as it travels to Maryville to take on the Saints at 1 p.m. at the Maryville Soccer Field.
