Softball Falls to Washburn in Road Doubleheader

TOPEKA, KAN. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team fell in a doubleheader at Washburn University on Sunday. The game one score was 9-1, and the nightcap went to Washburn, 10-6.

Washburn (5-6) took the early lead in the first game when Ashton Friend hit a three-run homer to center field in the first inning. The Ichabods would tack on two more in the third, and Marrit Mead hit a solo homer in the fourth to put Washburn ahead by six.

UMSL (1-3) put a run on the board in the fifth inning when Sara Fredrickson led off with a double. Anna VanGundy sacrifice bunted to advanced Fredrickson to third. Irene Travis followed up with an RBI single to score Fredrickson. 

The Ichabods would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game 9-1.

Megan Brown was credited with the loss, allowing five runs on five hits and five hit by pitches in three innings. Katie Schaake threw an inning and two-thirds allowing four runs on six hits and a walk.

Jaycee Ginter earned the win for Washburn allowing one run in five innings on three hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts.

In game two, McKenzie Lamos doubled in the first inning with one out. An out was recorded and then, Megan Brown and Corinne Daley walked to load the bases. Following a pitching change, Jenna Towle walked to score Lamos and give the Tritons the lead.

With an out in the second inning, Sara Fredrickson got another rally started by taking a hit by pitch. Lamos and Morgan Barnoski walked with two outs to load the bases. Megan Brown came through with a two-out single to score Fredrickson and Lamos putting the Tritons up 3-0.

Washburn would answer in the bottom half when Mead took a bases-loaded walk to score a run. With two outs, Hadley Kerschen doubled to empty the bases and put the Ichabods ahead 4-3.

Towle doubled to lead off the top of the third and a walk followed by a single from Courtney Settles loaded the bases again. Fredrickson grounded out to first to tie the game at 4-4. The rally stalled when Annie Scaramuzzi was thrown out at home trying to score on a fly out off the bat of Travis.

The game remained tied until Friend hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to give Washburn the lead.

Barnoski answered with a two-run blast in the sixth to put the Tritons back on top 6-5.

Autymn Schreiner led off the bottom half of the sixth with a solo home run to tie the game. Friend would put Washburn ahead a few batters later with another home run, this time of the three-run variety. Washburn would add another run in the inning to take a 10-6 lead.

Towle was credited with the loss for the Tritons. She allowed eight earned runs on eight hits, four walks, four hit batters, and five strikeouts. Mimi Bradley threw an inning allowing two hits and no earned runs.

Ginter was credited with the win in game two entering in relief. She allowed two runs on three hits, a walk, and four strikeouts in three and two-third innings.

The Tritons will face Emporia State University in a doubleheader in Topeka, Kan. on Monday, Feb. 21 starting at 10 a.m.
