UMSL Tops McKendree for 20th Win of the Season

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team has won 20 games for the third time in the last four years (2020-21 season shortened due to COVID-19). UMSL earned their 20th win, 72-49, on Senior Day against McKendree University. The Tritons scored 22 of their points off of turnovers. With the win, the Tritons clinched the Great Lakes Valley Conference Central Division title.

UMSL (20-6, 14-5 GLVC) started the first half on an 11-3 run capped by a three-pointer by Shane Wissink that forced an early timeout for McKendree (13-11, 9-11 GLVC). The Bearcats kept pace with the Tritons and eventually whittled the lead down to three points, 26-23, with 4:13 to play in the half.

Both teams traded baskets the rest of the way with McKendree's Aleksandar Davitkov hitting a three to end the half. The Tritons entered halftime leading 34-30.

The Bearcats would get within one point on a three from Oliver Stephen to start the second half, but UMSL locked down defensively and forced three straight McK possessions that ended in a turnover.

Marty Jackson hit a free throw to give UMSL a 39-33 lead before the first media timeout. From there the Tritons began to expand their lead.

Jose Grubbs knocked down a three to give the Tritons a 50-38 lead and McKendree would not be within single digits for the rest of the game.

The UMSL defense caused fits for the Bearcats who shot 28% from the field. The Tritons would go on to win 72-49.

Yaakema Rose Jr. led all scorers with 17 points. Jose Grubbs finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds. Marty Jackson finished with 11 points. Isaiah Fuller also reached double digits with 10 points.

Steve Webb led the team with three assists and scored six points. Shane Wissink scored seven points and led the team with four steals.

The Tritons honored six seniors, Marquis Collins, Shane Wissink, Yaakema Rose Jr., Kellen King, Steve Webb, and Jose Grubbs.

UMSL awaits the release of the GLVC Men's Basketball Tournament bracket to see who they will be playing at home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
