TOPEKA, KAN. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team's bats came alive on Saturday as UMSL scored 17 runs en route to two wins at the Washburn Invitational. The Tritons defeated Emporia State University, 10-5, and completed a thrilling 7-6 comeback against Fort Hays State University.
Game One
Jenna Towle started on the mound for the Tritons (3-5) in game one and she was outstanding through three innings allowing a sole baserunner on an error. Towle helped her cause by hitting a solo homer in the top of the third to give UMSL the early lead.
The Tritons padded their lead with a four-run fourth inning that was capped by a two-run home run from
McKenzie Lamos.
Emporia State (9-7) answered back in the bottom half of the fourth with four runs of their own including a two-run homer from Josie Harrison.
Corinne Daley answered with a three-run bomb to center field for the Tritons in the fifth inning. Lamos would double home two more RBI in the seventh to add some insurance.
Maddie Snemis was 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
McKenzie Lamos was 3-for-5 with four RBI including a homer and a double.
Corinne Daley was 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.
Jenna Towle earned the win, throwing four innings, allowing four runs, and striking out four.
Megan Brown pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits, a walk, and a strikeout.
Gracie Rabe was credited with the loss for the Hornets.
Game Two
Mimi Bradley started game two for the Tritons on the mound. Fort Hays State (5-9) opened game two with a run in the first inning to take the early lead. The Tigers had four singles in the first inning and left three on-base.
Kiana Blake homered for FHSU in the second inning to put the Tigers up by two.
Annie Scaramuzzi answered with a solo home run of her own. Later in the inning,
Katie Schaake hit a sacrifice fly to score
Mimi Bradley who reached on an error earlier in the inning.
With the game tied at two, Erika Flynn hit a three-run homer in the third inning to put the Tigers back on top.
Annie Scaramuzzi took the mound with two outs in the third inning and runners on first and second base. Scaramuzzi would get the strikeout to end the inning.
The teams would not score again until Loren Beggs hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to put FHSU up 6-2.
Scaramuzzi would answer again with her second solo home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
The Tigers' Morgan Schmidt ran into trouble in the seventh inning. after throwing six strong innings.
McKenzie Lamos led off with a single. After a fly out from
Irene Travis,
Megan Brown walked. Erika Flynn entered the game for Schmidt on the mound. Scaramuzzi popped out to second base to bring the Tritons down to their final out.
Hayli Richards doubled to score two runs and cut the lead to one.
Corinne Daley doubled to score Richards and tie the game at six.
Riley Schultz capped off the late inning heroics with a single to score Daley and walk-off the 7-6 win.
Scaramuzzi was credited with the win for the Tritons. The junior threw four-and-a-third innings allowing one run while striking out nine Tigers.
Erika Flynn took the loss for Fort Hays State.
The Tritons will take to the field again in the Washburn Invitational on Sunday with a game at 9:30 a.m. against the University of Nebraska at Kearney and at 3:30 p.m. against the University of Central Missouri.
