TOPEKA, KAN. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team ended the Washburn Invitational with two wins on Sunday to complete an undefeated weekend. UMSL defeated the University of Nebraska at Kearney, 5-4, and shut out the University of Central Missouri, 4-0.
Game One
The Tritons (5-5) started the day with a 9:30 a.m. start time. The bats heard the alarm clock this morning for both teams. UMSL and UNK (3-8) combined to hit five home runs in the first game of the day.
Carlee Liesch put the Lopers on top with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. The UMSL starting pitcher,
Jenna Towle, settled in after the home run to record three straight outs.
With one out and
Annie Scaramuzzi on first,
Jenna Towle tied up the game with a two-run blast to center in the second inning.
Maddie Snemis singled in the top of the third inning with one out.
McKenzie Lamos connected on a two-run homer to right center to put UMSL up 4-2.
Liesch answered in the bottom half of the third with a solo homer to left center.
Scaramuzzi singled to lead off the top of the fourth for UMSL. After an out,
Corinne Daley reached on an error by the third baseman. The error advance Scaramuzzi to third.
Riley Schultz hit a sacrifice fly to score Scaramuzzi, giving the Tritons a two-run cushion.
Lyndsey Roth hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth for the Lopers, but Towle continued to limit the damage.
Mimi Bradley entered the game in the sixth inning after Towle allowed a lead off double. Bradley faced the minimum six hitters, not allowing a baserunner and earning the save.
Towle recorded her second win of the season, throwing five innings and striking out three.
Game Two
Annie Scaramuzzi was lights out on the mound in game two. Scaramuzzi threw seven innings of shut out softball against Central Missouri (2-9) with 10 strikeouts, three hits, and one walk.
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the first inning, Scaramuzzi singled down te left field line to score
Irene Travis.
After a
Maddie Snemis single in the third,
McKenzie Lamos doubled to score Snemis. Lamos scored on a single by
Irene Travis to give the Tritons a 3-0 lead.
Corinne Daley hit a sacrifice fly to score
Irene Travis in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-0.
Sadie Parks was credited with the loss for UCM. Parks threw two innings and allowed three runs on six hits and a walk.

The Tritons travel to Florida to play 10 games in six days. The first of which is Wednesday, Mar. 2 at 10 a.m. against the University of Bridgeport, followed by a game against Georgian Court University at 12:15 p.m.
