SWEET 16

Tritons maintain momentum, win 16th of the season

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The good times continue for the UMSL women's basketball team.

After an emotionally and physically draining win over Drury Friday night, it was no rest for the weary as the Tritons were back on Chuck Smith Court Saturday as they hosted the SBU Bearcats.

UMSL was able to maintain the momentum en route to the 75-57 final. The Tritons are 16-2, 12-1 and patiently wait for the latest national rankings, where they are expected to climb up the charts after the Drury win.

As for SBU, the Tritons outscored the Bearcats 15-11 in the first before opening the floodgates in the second, as they led 35-20 at half.

In the third, Mallory Ronshausen sized up and connected for her patent 3-pointer from the wing, and Alex LaPorta, who lit up the assists, found the freshman for the score.

LaPorta finished with nine assists and eight points.

The Bearcats called for the box press in effort to throw off the Tritons, force turnovers, and gain added possessions but UMSL banded together and outscored the Bearcats 20-11 to create added separation.

As a team, the Tritons hit 52 percent from the field, 47 percent from the arc, and 89 percent from the line.

This makes back-to-back games where the Tritons have hit at least 89 percent from the charity stripe.

Kiara Stewart has continued her dominance on the block as she led all scoring with her 21-point performance.

Ronshausen added 14, Faye Meissner tossed in 14, and Jalysa Stokes added 13.

The Tritons are hot -- red hot -- and the Rockhurst Hawks visit UMSL at 4 p.m. Monday.

The Tritons sit in first place in the GLVC Central Division and have an .882 winning percentage overall and a .917 winning percentage in the conference.
