Softball Wins Twice at Illinois Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team took both games of a GLVC doubleheader at Illinois Springfield on Monday night, winning both games by a score of 9-4, with the nightcap going nine innings. 

With the two wins, UMSL opens GLVC play 4-0 for the first time since 2016. 

Records: UMSL (15-8, 4-0 GLVC), Illinois Springfield (14-8, 0-4 GLVC)

Game 1: UMSL 9, UIS 4

UMSL scored seven unanswered runs, including five in the sixth to rally for the win.

UIS took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings before the Tritons tied it at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Junior Morgan Barnoski brought the first run across with a sac fly, while sophomore Riley Schultz followed with a two-out RBI single for the equalizer.

The Tritons offense exploded for six hits in the sixth, which included five consecutive hits to lead off the frame. Graduate student Megan Brown led off with a solo home run, while junior McKenzie Lamos recorded a triple for the third straight game to drive in another run. Senior Corinne Daley added a two-run single. 

UMSL plated another two runs in the seventh, taking advantage of five UIS errors. 

Junior Jenna Towle picked up the win in relief, going the final four innings. 

UMSL tallied 10 hits, including two each from Daley, Schultz and junior Annie Scaramuzzi.

Game 2: UMSL 9, UIS 4 (9 inn.) 

The Prairie Stars forced extra play by scoring all four of their runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 4-0 deficit. 

The Tritons earned the win with five runs on four hits in the top of the ninth. Four of those runs came with two outs, including a three-run double down the line by Brown. 

UMSL finished with nine hits, including four from Schultz, while Scaramuzzi tallied two hits. Daley delivered a solo home run in the sixth inning. 

Scaramuzzi also collected the win in the circle. She scattered eight hits, walked five and struck out nine. 

Up Next: UMSL welcomes Truman State on Saturday for a GLVC doubleheader in its home opener at Noon. The Tritons then host Quincy on Sunday.
