ST. LOUIS, MO. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team won their first home match of the season on Friday against Missouri Baptist University. UMSL topped MBU 6-1 winning the doubles point as well as five singles matches.
The Tritons (1-3) got started off on the right foot in doubles play.
Karl Heinrichs and
Marcos Navas won the top doubles match 6-4.
Jose Mayorga and
Raphael Kerndl pulled out a tough No. 2 doubles match 7-6 with the tiebreaker.
AJ Bower and
Juan Vigil won No. 3 doubles 6-2 giving the Tritons the doubles point and the sweep.
Singles play saw mutiple three set matches.
Marcos Navas dropped the first set of the top singles match 6-3. Navas came back to win set two 6-3, and won the match with a 6-4 set three win.
Juan Vigil took set one of No. 2 singles 6-2, but fell in the second set 6-1. Vigil rebounded in a hard fought third set with a 7-6 tiebreaker win.
Timofey Tokmakov earned the lone singles win for the Spartans (0-4). Tokmakov won a first set tiebreaker 7-6 in the fourth singles match.
Karl Heinrichs won the second set 6-2. Tokmakov secured the win with a 6-3 third set.
Raphael Kerndl won a first set tiebreaker 7-6 in the fifth singles match. Kerndl followed up with a 6-2 second set win to finish the match.
Jose Mayorga won a pair of sets 6-4 to win at No. 3 singles.
AJ Bower won the sixth singles match with set scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
The Tritons will travel to the University of Indianapolis on Sunday, Mar. 6 for a match starting at 1 p.m. ET.
