Baseball Falls to Minnesota Duluth in Final Game of the Series

ST. LOUIS, MO - The University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons baseball team looked to wrap up a three game series with University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday afternoon with a single nine-inning game. The offense continued its high-scoring trend, plating six runs on seven hits. It was not enough, however, as the Tritons would drop another close game by the final score of eight to six. Brandon Olion got on base three times, recording two hits and a walk. Freshman Ben Beier had another nice day, finishing with two hits and three RBI.

The Bulldogs (4-1) led off the scoring in the first inning via a two-out, two-strike base hit to center field, to drive in their first run. The Bulldogs would tack on another run on an RBI base hit, but Center Fielder Carson Holin cut down a runner trying to go first to third to end the threat, keeping the score at 2-0.

In the bottom of the first, lead off hitter Brandon Olion stayed hot at the plate and got the Tritons (1-7) started with a double, followed by a walk to Holin and an infield single by Matt DiMemmo to load the bases. Logan Mantz came up with two outs and was hit by a pitch to plate the first run for the Tritons, cutting the Bulldogs lead to 2-1. Ben Beier followed suit and drove in two runs with a base hit, then an RBI infield single by Leighton Keller gave the Tritons a 4-2 lead after the first inning.

In the second inning, the Bulldogs made it a 4-3 ballgame when an infield single drove in a runner from third base with two outs. The score was evened at four when a sac fly brought another Bulldog run across.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ben Beier kept his hot streak alive, driving a base hit to left field, scoring Mitchell Green from second base to break the tie and give the Tritons the 5-4 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs tied it up at five after a lead off double would come around to score on an RBI base hit to center field. The Bulldogs tacked on two more in the inning to make it 7-5. The Bulldogs would add another run in the eighth inning to make it 8-5.

The Tritons would not go away quietly. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Tritons loaded the bases. With two outs, Carson Holin scorched a ground ball to the first baseman and beat him to the bag for an infield hit, driving in a run and brought the score to 8-6. But the Tritons could not add more, stranding three runners in the inning. The Tritons could not mount another comeback in the ninth.

Isaac Powers was credited with the loss, throwing three and two thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits while not issuing a walk. Powers' first three innings were scoreless, only allowing one hit in those three frames of work.

The Tritons return to action next weekend as they travel to Missouri S&T for a four-game series in Rolla, Mo.
