St. Louis – Lindenwood used a pair of home runs in the latter part of the game to defeat the University of Missouri – St. Louis baseball team 9-7 Friday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field in St. Louis, Mo. The Tritons held a 7-4 lead heading into the seventh but could not hold on as the Lions claimed the first game of the four-game series.
How it Happened – After a scoreless first three innings of play, the Lions opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs to grab an early 2-0 lead. In their half of the fourth, the Tritons answered as
Matt DiMemmo singled and scored on a
Mitchell Green double to right-center to cut the Lions lead to 2-1.
Logan Mantz then singled to left field to push Green across to score as it evened the contest at 2-2.
Lindenwood regained the lead in the top of the sixth with two runs on a hit and an error to take a 4-2 lead, but UMSL answered in the home half of the inning as the Tritons sent nine batters to the plate in the frame to take their first lead of the day. After a pair of singles and an error loaded the bases,
Ben Beier was hit by a pitch to cut the Lions lead to 4-3. UMSL took the lead as
Carson Steiner ripped a single to right field to score two runs, which put the Tritons on top 5-4. UMSL plated two more runs in the frame on an infield ground out and a wild pitch to extend the lead to 7-4.
Lindenwood scored twice in the seventh inning on a two-run homer and then used a three-run blast in the top of the eighth to retake the advantage at 9-7. The Tritons could not get anything going late in the contest as Logan Katen entered the game in the seventh and retired the final nine UMSL batters in a row to earn the win for Lindenwood.
