ST. LOUIS, MO. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's and women's tennis teams fell to Southwest Baptist University in home Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matches at the Dwight Davis Courts in Forest Park on Saturday. The UMSL men lost a close match, 4-3. The Triton women fell 6-1.
Men
The Tritons (2-10, 1-2 GLVC) opened up with a strong performance in doubles play.
Marcos Navas and
Karl Heinrichs combined for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Raphael Kerndl and
Jose Mayorga clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Carlos Corser and Max Sanoja topped
Juan Vigil and
AJ Bower, 6-0, to score No. 2 doubles for SBU (9-10, 3-1 GLVC).
Karl Heinrichs won No. 5 singles for the Tritons with a 6-4 win in set one followed by a 7-6 tiebreaker win in set two.
Raphael Kerndl won No. 4 singles with a set one win of 6-1 and a 6-0 win in set three. Kerndl dropped set two 6-4.
Makary Adamek defeated
Marcos Navas at No. 1 singles claiming set one 6-2 and set three 7-6. Navas won the second set 6-3.
Juan Vigil won set one in No. 2 singles 6-2. Alvaro Nunez answered with wins in set two and three, 6-4, 6-0.
Jose Mayorga claimed the first set of No. 3 singles 6-4. Carlos Corser would go on to win the match with a 6-2 set two win and a 6-3 set three win.
Max Sanoja topped
AJ Bower, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 6 singles.
Women
The Tritons (7-7, 2-2 GLVC) won the doubles point in thrilling fashion. First,
Odette Beagrie and
Leticia Lunge won the No. 1 doubles match convincingly, 6-2. Then,
Anna Domingo and
Tara Erler battled out a tiebreaker in No. 2 doubles. Domingo and Erler won the match 7-6 by claiming the 11-9 tiebreak.
Domingo could not outlast her opponent in No. 2 singles. Paula Ballesteros won the first set 6-3. Domingo answered with a 7-6 tiebreaker win in set two, but Ballesteros would finish with a 6-3 win in the third set.
Tara Erler fell in set one of No. 5 singles, 6-1, to Lola Cincunegui, but bounced back for a 6-2 win in set two. Cincunegui would clinch the match with a 7-5 win in set three.
Diana Cabrera topped
Odette Beagrie in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
Maja Lietzau fell to Elsa Pascual, 7-6, 6-2, in No. 3 singles.
Ghada Dirninger won No. 4 singles against
Leticia Lunge, 7-5, 6-4.
