Baseball Awards Brady, Copeland, and Musial Scholarships

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team awarded the James Brady Scholarship, the Arnold Copeland Scholarship, and the Stan Musial Scholarship on Saturday before the doubleheader against Rockhurst.

Matt DiMemmo was announced as the inaugural recipient of the James Brady Scholarship. Jim Brady was the head coach of UMSL baseball for over 33 years. He owned a career record of 835-664-5, the most wins for any head coach in any sport in UMSL Athletics history. Entering his final season in 2017, he ranked 15th among NCAA Division II active coaches for most career wins. During his time at the helm, Brady's teams had 24 winning seasons including 12 30-win seasons. Brady guided five teams to the NCAA Tournament including two College World Series appearances. Coach Brady was inducted into the UMSL Hall of Fame in 2018.

Clayton Stephens was presented the Arnold Copeland Scholarship which is awarded to a player that exemplifies the same passion for the sport that Coach Copeland displayed and who gives relentless effort and is a great teammate. Copeland was the UMSL baseball program's first coach when the university sponsored athletics in 1967. Copeland coached six seasons and led UMSL to its first ever 20-win season, going 23-6 in 1972. UMSL won the Midwest Regional title and the program's first ever bid to the College World Series. In his last four seasons at the helm, Copeland's teams compiled a record of 63-42-1.

Brandon Olion was awarded the Stan Musial Scholarship on behalf of the Musial family. MLB Hall of Famer Stan Musial was a beloved St. Louis Cardinal and spent 22 seasons with the team. He was named MVP three-times. Musial won seven National League batting titles and was an all-star over 20 times. He and his family funded several scholarships for collegiate baseball programs throughout the St. Louis area. The motto of the scholarship is "unless you give it all you've got, there isn't any sense in playing." Olion is the inaugural recipient of the scholarship.
