Seven Runs in Final Two Innings Propels UMSL to a 10-5 Victory Over McKendree

Lebanon, Ill. – The University of Missouri - St. Louis baseball team scored seven times in the final two innings of play to break open a tied ball game as the Tritons defeated McKendree 10-5 Friday afternoon at Hypes Field in Lebanon, Ill. The win for the Tritons ran their current winning streak to three games.

How it Happened – The Tritons opened the scoring in the second as Clayton Stephens singled and scored after a Ben Beier doubled into the right-center field gap to put UMSL on top 1-0.

UMSL added to the lead in the third as Carson Holin drew an inning opening walk and moved to third after another single by Brandon Olion to put runners at the corners. Holin came across to score after a Bearcat error to make the score 2-0 while Olion scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitchell Green to extend the lead to 3-0. McKendree cut into the Tritons advantage with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 3-1.

The Bearcats drew to within a run in the home half of the fifth on an inning opening home run over the right-field wall to put the score at 3-2. McKendree then took advantage of a pair of singles to drive in a run in the bottom of the seventh to draw even with the Tritons at 3-3.

Carson Steiner put UMSL back on top in the eighth inning as he lashed a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw over the right-field fence to give the Tritons a 6-3 lead. That was the first home run of the year for Steiner. Leighton Keller added to the lead with a one-out sacrifice fly to score Holin from third after he reached base on a double and moved to third on an Olion single to put the Tritons on top 7-3.

UMSL tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth as Beier ripped an RBI double off the wall in center field and then scored on a Brandon Pasley single to extend the Tritons lead to 9-3. Olion added to the lead with an RBI single as Pasley scored from third to push the Tritons lead to 10-3. The Bearcats rallied for a pair of runs on their third home run of the day to cut into the UMSL lead at 10-5 but could not get any closer as Trent Anderson forced a flyout and a groundout to earn his first win of the year.
