Tritons Fall to Drury in Series Finale

Ozark, Mo. – The University of Missouri – St. Louis baseball team could not overcome an early deficit as Drury scored in the first four innings of play to defeat the Tritons 19-6 in seven innings at US Baseball Park Sunday afternoon in Ozark, Mo. With the victory, the Panthers earned a weekend sweep of UMSL.

How it Happened – The Tritons cracked the scoreboard in the top of the first as Brandon Olion started the frame with a single and moved to second on a ground out to the shortstop. Olion scored on a fielding error by the Panthers to give UMSL an early 1-0 lead. Drury answered in their half of the inning with a pair of runs off a double to the left-center field gap to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage.

Drury extended the lead in the second as the Panthers used five hits to score four times to put them in front 6-1, but the Tritons battled back in the top of the third. Carson Holin reached base on an error to begin the inning and moved up to second after Olion singled to right field to put runners at first and second. Holin came home to score on a Kameron Laskowski single to make the score 6-2. After Olion was thrown out at home, Logan Mantz ripped a single to left center to plate Laskowski as it cut the Drury lead in half at 6-3. The Panthers once again answered and scored four more times in the bottom of the third to push their advantage out to 10-4. Drury added five more runs in the home half of the fourth to take a 15-3 lead midway through the contest.

The Tritons battled back in the top of the fifth as Clayton Stephens walked and advanced to second as Mitchell Green singled to left. After Mantz was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Carson Steiner ripped a two-run double down the right-field line to put the score at 15-5. Mantz then came across to score on a groundout to the third basemen to cut the Panthers lead to 15-6.

Drury tacked on four runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 19-6. The Tritons had an opportunity to cut the lead once again in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with two outs, but the Panthers forced a foul out to end the uprising and earn the series sweep.
