Kovac’s Goal Gives UMSL 1-0 Win At Lewis In GLVC Opener

Arman Kowac scored the game-winner in the 51st minute on Sunday

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Arman Kovac scored what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the second half to give the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons a 1-0 win at Lewis in the GLVC opener for both squads on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Tritons improve to 2-2-1, 1-0 GLVC while the Flyers drop to 2-2, 0-1 GLVC. UMSL has now won three of the last four meetings against Lewis.

Neither side was able to get much offense going in the first half as the game was played in rain for much of the contest. The Tritons held a 4-2 advantage in shots including 3-1 in shots on goal.

UMSL broke the deadlock in the 51st minute. Kovac broke free and dribbled down the left side and took a shot that was stopped by Sebastian Doppelhofer but he was unable to corral the rebound and Kovac knocked it home for his second goal of the season.

Momentum swung in the 69th minutes as the Tritons were forced to play a man down for the final 21 minutes as JT Goldstein was sent off with a red card.

The Flyers put the pressure on looking for the equalizer outshooting UMSL 8-0 over the final 20 minutes but Austin Reis was up to the challenge making four saves including two in the final minute as he denied Arturs Gorodnickis the tying goal.

Lewis finished the game outshooting the Tritons 12-7 including 6-5 in shots on goal. The Flyers also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Kovac led UMSL with three shots on goal while Goldstein took two shots and put one on goal. Reis stopped six shots to pick up his first shutout of the season and third of his career.

The Tritons are back at home this Friday hosting Quincy at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
