KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team got a late goal from
Leo Sowa to pick up a 1-1 draw against Truman State at Stokes Stadium on Sunday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo. The Tritons are now 3-4-2, 2-2-1 GLVC while the Bulldogs are 3-2-3, 2-1-2 GLVC.
Truman controlled possession for most of the opening half as it outshot UMSL 9-4 including 2-0 in shots on goal but neither side was able to get a goal.
The Bulldogs continued applying pressure and eventually broke the scoreless deadlock with 19:50 remaining as Nathan Grewe scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Adam Shine for his first of the season.
The Tritons dominated the remainder of the game outshooting Truman 9-0 as they were looking for the equalizer. UMSL was awarded a penalty kick with 11:11 to play after Diego Guzman was called for a foul in the box and a yellow card was issued to Holden Potter. Sowa stepped up to the penalty spot and scored but the goal was taken off the board and Sowa was forced to convert again, which he did, for his team leading fifth goal of the season.
The Tritons had four chances at the game-winner in the final 10 minutes including two that were on goal but saved by Justin Olwig.
Nick Schreiber's attempt off a corner kick was saved and then
Jack Meuse had a chance in the 86th minute which was also saved.
UMSL outshot the Bulldogs 13-6 in the second half including 9-5 in shots on goal to finish the contest with 17-15 edge in shots and 9-7 edge in shots on target. The Tritons also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
UMSL is back in action this Friday (Sept. 30) as it travels to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst at 7:30 p.m. at Bourke Field on the Rockhurst campus.
