ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team second half rally came up short in a 3-2 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the Lou Fusz Soccer Complex. The Tritons drop to 1-2-1 on the season while the Panthers improve to 2-1.
KWC scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute. Theo White played a ball forward to Julian Gonzalez who then found Calum Newson for his second goal of the season.
UMSL scored the equalizer 16 minutes later off a corner kick.
Leo Sowa served the corner into the box and found
Brady Glon on the other end. Glon got his back foot on it and redirected it into the back post for his first of the season.
The Tritons had a 7-6 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes.
The Panthers regained the lead less than five minutes into the second half. Jaxon Allard took a shot from inside the 18-yard box that was blocked but White was there for the rebound and he scored into the upper right corner.
KWC extended its lead to 3-1 12 minutes later as Gonzalez scored with an assist from Newson for his first of the season.
UMSL dominated the final 15 minutes of play but only got one goal to show for it. Sowa hit one off the crossbar in the 77th minute and then four minutes later
Jack Meuse had an open goal to shoot at but his shot hit off the right post and caromed out.
The Tritons had four chances in the span of 97 seconds.
Drew Schenk had the first chance but it was saved by Hannes Nilsson.
Gabe Stanislawski had a chance a minute later that was saved by Nilsson. Sowa had a chance blocked and then
Mylz Barrington follow up on the rebound was saved off the line by a Panther defender.
UMSL cut the deficit to one with 4:13 remaining. Meuse was pulled down in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Sowa stepped to the spot and converted it right down the middle for his team leading fourth goal of the season.
Sowa had another chance shortly after the equalizer but Nilsson was there to make the save.
The Tritons finished with an 18-12 advantage in shots including 8-6 in shots on goal. UMSL also had the advantage in corner kicks with eight compared to five for KWC.
The Tritons begin GLVC play next Sunday (Sept. 11) as they travel up to Romeoville, Ill., to take on Lewis at 2:30 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
