No. 11 UMSL Men’s Basketball Drops Top 25 Contest at No. 24 Indianapolis

ST. LOUIS – The 11th ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team dropped a Top 25 contest to 24th ranked Indianapolis 77-70 at Nicoson Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons drop to 14-2, 6-2 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 14-2, 6-2 GLVC.

Saturday's contest was a matchup between two of the top scoring offensive and defensive teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and the game lived up to it as there were seven ties and three lead changes along the way.

UIndy jumped out to an early six-point lead but UMSL rallied with a 10-2 run to take a 13-11 lead after a jumper on the break by Isaiah Fuller. The Hounds regained the lead on the next possession as Bruno Williams converted a conventional three-point play.

The two sides continued to trade baskets until Bowen Sandquist hit three free throws to put the Tritons back in front at 23-22 with 9:22 remaining in the opening half.

UIndy countered with four straight to take a 26-23 lead on a layup by David Ejah. The lead grew to four but the Tritons got four straight points from Dylan West in the span of 0:44 to even the contest at 33.

Josiah Tynes hit a three-pointer in the final minute of the half to give the Greyhounds a 36-33 lead at the break.

UIndy opened the second half on a 7-2 run to extend its lead to eight 4:32 into the frame on a three-pointer from Jesse Bingham.

UMSL responded with a 14-2 run over the next 3:30 to take its largest lead of the game at 49-45 on a three-pointer from Donovan Vickers. Vickers had six points in the run while Sandquist and Matt Enright added three points apiece and Victor Nwagbaraocha added two more.

That would be the Tritons last lead of the game as the Hounds countered with eight straight points and wouldn't allow UMSL to get closer than two points the rest of the contest. The Tritons had no answer for Bingham, Jakobie Robinson or Kendrick Tchoua as the trio combined to score 26 of the team's final 32 points.

The Tritons were held to 42 percent (22-for-53) shooting from the floor in the contest including 9-fo-20 from three and hit all 17 of its free throw attempts. Fuller led five UMSL players in double figures with 16 points. Sandquist added 14 while Vickers finished with 11 and West and Enright had 10 apiece.

UIndy shot 46 percent (25-for-55) from the field, was 7-of-19 from three and shot 74 percent at the charity stripe. The Hound defense forced 13 turnovers which resulted in 18 points. Bingham led all scorers with 23 points while Tchoua had 19, Robinson finished with 12 and Bruno Williams added 10.

The Tritons conclude their three-game road trip on Monday against Lewis at 3 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
