ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team struck first on Friday in its 2-1 loss against Missouri S&T at Jackling Field at Allgood-Bailey Stadium in Rolla. The Tritons drop to 2-4-2, 1-4-1 GLVC while the Miners improve to 3-6-2, 2-4-1 GLVC.
S&T took the only three shots in the first 45 minutes and none were on target.
UMSL broke the scoreless deadlock 10:13 into the second half.
Melo Mensah took a shot from just outside the penalty area that was blocked out for a corner kick.
Bobby Boone took the corner and sent the ball across the box to
JT Goldstein. Goldstein got a head to it and centered it into the middle of the box where
Luca Saewe was able to get on the other end of it sliding a shot through a maze of defenders and crossed the goal line for his third goal of the season.
The Miners responded in the 74th minute. After the Tritons were called for offsides, Robert Suellentrop played the free kick deep downfield where Mike Banazik ran onto it and blasted a shot from just outside the penalty area beating
Austin Reis to tie the game.
S&T took the lead 2:17 later as Sigurd Semlitsch carried the ball down the right side of the pitch then crossed the ball back to the top of the box to Banazik who scored from just inside the penalty area for his fifth goal of the season.
UMSL had a chance in the final five minutes for the equalizer but Goldstein's shot was blocked by a defender and never made its way towards goal.
The Miners finished the contest with a 12-6 advantage in shots including 5-1 in shots on goal. The Tritons had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Reis made three saves in goal.
UMSL returns to the pitch on Sunday as it takes on crosstown rival No. 24 Maryville at 2:30 p.m. at the Maryville Soccer Field. The Saints played to a scoreless tie against McKendree on Friday afternoon.
