ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team's upset bid of No. 24 Maryville came up short in a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Maryville Soccer Field. The Tritons drop to 2-5-2, 1-5-1 GLVC while the Saints move to 8-1-3, 5-1-2 GLVC.
Maryville took the early lead on goal in the eighth minute Yayo Mutombo received a pass from Tim Smith and took a shot from just inside the top of the penalty box that beat
Austin Reis to the upper left corner.
The Saints nearly made it 2-0 in the 10th minute but Jimmy Doherty's shot from the center of the penalty area missed wide left.
UMSL's first scoring chance came in the 16th minute as
Melo Mensah carried the ball into the penalty box and hit a low line drive shot towards the left post but Nick Hemann was there to make the save.
Mensah had another chance in the 21st minute from inside the box but his shot missed to the left.
Maryville had an 8-2 advantage in shots but each team had one shot on goal and two corner kicks apiece.
Yemil Lopez nearly scored the equalizer in the 52nd minute as he took shot from the left side of the box from about 10 yards out but Hemann made a leaping save to prevent the goal.
The Tritons tied the game in the 62nd minute as
Devin Livingstone headed home a corner kick from
Bobby Boone inside the right post for his third goal of the season.
The Saints regained the lead in the 75th minute. Smith carried the ball down the right side and crossed it to the middle of the box to Mason Crew who scored inside the left post for his fourth goal of the season.
Nick Schreiber had a chance at the equalizer in the 78th minute but his shot attempt from the center of the box was blocked.
Mensah had a chance in the 88th minute but his shot from the middle of the box missed high.
Maryville finished the contest with a 12-8 advantage in shots with each side putting four shots on goal and had four corner kicks apiece.
UMSL is back at home this Friday (Oct. 13) hosting Upper Iowa at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
