ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team defeated University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy 60-51 in overtime on Friday evening in an exhibition contest for both teams at the Mark Twain Building.
The Tritons jumped out to an early four-point lead but the Eutectics came back to tie the game at six on three-pointer from Grace Beyer.
UMSL scored the next five points on baskets from
Jalysa Stokes,
Emerson Weller and a free throw from
Morgan Ramthun to take its largest lead of the quarter with 2:12 to play but USHP scored the final three points of the frame on a free throw from Karsyn Morgan and then Morgan stole a pass and scored on the break to cut the deficit to two points.
The Tritons scored the first four points of the second quarter to extend its lead to six but couldn't shake the Eutectics as they closed the half on a 6-0 run to tie the contest at 21 at halftime on a layup at the buzzer by Beyer.
UMSL scored the first five points of the third quarter to retake the lead but UHSP countered with eight in a row to take its first lead of the contest at 29-26 on a three-pointer from Elizabeth Allanach with 5:28 to go in the frame.
The Tritons closed the stanza strong outscoring the Eutectics 13-4 over the final five minutes to take a six-point lead into the final quarter.
UMSL scored the first six points to open the fourth quarter building its largest lead of the night at 45-33 on a jumper from Stokes. UHSP answered with an 8-0 run to pull within two on a three-pointer from Beyer with 3:30 remaining.
The Tritons pushed their lead back to four on a layup by
Alex Wolff but Beyer tied the game with back-to-back jumpers with the last one coming with 90 seconds left.
Ramthun gave UMSL the lead back with a jumper at the 1:06 mark but Beyer answered again scoring on a driving layup with 0:32 left in regulation to tie it again.
The Tritons held for the final shot and had two chances to win the game but missed both and the Eutectics had a chance with 0:02 left but a turnover on the inbounds pass sent the game into overtime.
UMSL dominated the extra frame as it scored the first nine points and kept UHSP scoreless until 0:26 when Beyer scored to make it a seven-point game.
Tori Standefer sealed the win hitting two free throws with 0:17 left.
The Tritons shot 38 percent (23-for-61) from the floor in the contest including 3-of-15 from three and 73 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Eutectics 39-36. Stokes finished with a team-high 18 points while Ramthun added nine points, 10 rebounds and six assists while
Brooke Woodyard added eight points off the bench and Wolff contributed seven points.
The Eutectics were held to 36 percent (19-for-53) from the field in the game including 6-of-21 from three and shot 78 percent at the foul line. Beyer led all scorers with 32 points in the contest. Allanach and Morgan had five points apiece.
UMSL hosts Principia in its home opener on Monday evening at 5 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
