ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team dropped the final game of its two-game trip up north to Michigan Tech 83-75 on Saturday afternoon at the SDC Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich. The Tritons drop to 1-3 while the Huskies move to 1-2.
UMSL struggled in the first 20 minutes hitting only 9-of-26 attempts from the floor including 0-for-6 from three while Michigan Tech hit 13 of its 25 attempts and was locked in from behind the arc knocking down 10 of 17 attempts to build a 42-24 lead at the half.
The Tritons opened the second half on a 16-4 run to cut the Huskie lead to 46-40 after a jumper from
Matt Enright with 13:27 left in the contest.
Michigan Tech stretched its lead back to double digits as part of a 12-4 run but UMSL wouldn't go away countering with long run of its own to get back within six at 60-54 after
Emanuel Prospere II made 1-of-2 at the foul line with 7:42 remaining.
The Tritons continued to battle but were unable to get closer than six the rest of the contest as the Huskies hit all eight of their free throws in the final 70 seconds to secure the victory.
Mayson Quartlebaum led the way for UMSL with a career-high 26 points while Enright added 22 and Prospere II finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Tritons shot 55 percent (17-for-31) from the field in the second half including 5-of-11 from three to finish the game at 46 percent shooting. They also shot 82 percent at the foul line and outrebounded Michigan Tech 31-28.
The Huskies got a game-high 33 points from Marcus Tomashek while Tyler Robarge had 13 and Adam Hobson and Dan Gherzgher finished with 11 points apiece.
MTU finished the game shooting 53 percent (26-for-49) from the floor including 14-of-27 from three and 74 percent at the foul line.
UMSL continues its season opening six-game road trip next Tuesday as it takes on Parkside at 3:15 p.m. at Maryville University.
