ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team shot 68 percent and outscored Missouri S&T 49-27 in the second half to win its GLVC opener 66-57 on Saturday afternoon at Gibson Arena in Rolla, Mo. The Tritons improve to 3-1, 1-0 GLVC while the Miners drop to 1-4, 0-1 GLVC.
UMSL trailed by as many as 15 at 30-15 with under a minute to play in the first half after Bonnie Lew Ludlow hit two free throws. The Tritons got a spark going into the intermission as
Jalysa Stokes beat the clock with a jumper in the paint cutting the deficit to 13 at the break.
UMSL struggled shooting the ball in the first 20 minutes hitting only 7-of-30 shots while S&T shot 44 percent including 6-of-12 in the second quarter as it outscored the Tritons 18-7 in the second quarter to build its double-digit halftime lead.
UMSL opened the second half on a 13-5 run that cut the Miner lead to 35-30 on a jumper from
Tori Standefer less than three minutes into the frame. The Tritons still trailed by seven just past the halfway point of the third quarter but outscored S&T 13-6 over the final four minutes to tie the game at 45 on a jumper by
Amaya Blake at the end of the quarter.
UMSL took its first lead since early in the game on its first possession of the final quarter on a jumper by
Alex Wolff. The two sides traded baskets over the first three minutes of the session and were still tied at 51 after a jumper from Katelynne Roberts.
The Tritons went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes getting baskets from
Emerson Weller,
Brooke Woodyard,
Morgan Ramthun and Wolff to build their largest lead of the contest to that point.
S&T cut the lead in half behind baskets from Roberts and Norah Gum but wouldn't get any closer as UMSL got a layup from Ramthun and free throws from Stokes, Wolff and
Audrey Martinez-Stewart to seal the victory.
The Tritons hit 21-of-31 shots in the final 20 minutes to finish the game shooting 28-for-61 (45.9 percent) from the floor in the contest but were 0-of-6 from three and shot only 50 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Miners 41-to-30 and were led by Ramthun with a game-high 13 boards while Wolff grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
Stokes finished with a game-high 24 points and was joined in double figures in scoring by Wolff with a career-high 13 points and Blake added 10 more.
S&T finished the contest shooting 42.6 percent (23-for-54) from the field, was 1-of-10 from three and shot 77 percent at the charity stripe. Roberts led the Miners with 21 points while Chorus Davis finished with 11 points.
The Tritons begin a three-game homestand on Monday evening hosting Upper Iowa at 5:30 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
