Women’s Basketball Defeats Upper Iowa for Fourth Straight Win

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four and remained unbeaten in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 74-60 win over Upper Iowa on Monday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 4-1, 2-0 GLVC while the Peacocks drop to 2-3, 0-2 GLVC.

UMSL fell behind 5-0 less than two minutes into the game but came back to tie the game at 12. The Tritons used a 9-0 in the span of 2:09 to build a nine point lead but Helen Staley hit three free throws with 0.2 seconds left to cut the deficit to six. Jalysa Stokes had eight points in the frame while Amaya Blake and Alex Wolff added six and four points respectively.

The two sides traded baskets over the first three minutes of the second quarter before UMSL pulled away closing the half on a 14-6 run to take a 40-26 lead at the intermission. UMSL got a layup from Wolff to start the third quarter to take its largest lead of the game but Upper Iowa got hot from three sparking an 18-6 run that allowed it to cut the Triton advantage to four points with 4:42 left in the stanza. The Peacocks fit four threes' in a row during that stretch to climb back into the contest.

UMSL never relinquished the lead though closing the quarter on a 12-7 run to take a nine-point lead into the final 10 minutes.

The Peacocks got an old fashioned three-point play from Brooke Evenson on their first possession of the final stanza to pull within six but wouldn't get any closer as the Tritons scored eight of the next 11 points to push their lead back to double digits on a jumper from Blake halfway through the quarter. That lead didn't dip below nine the rest of the contest as UMSL closed it out for the 14-point victory.

The Tritons shot 48 percent (33-for-69) from the floor including 1-of-12 from three but shot 88 percent at the foul line and outrebounded UIU 41-to-34. The Tritons dominated inside outscoring the Peacocks 42-to-18 in the paint and 17-to-8 in points off turnovers.

Stokes led all scorers with a game-high 24 points and was joined in double figures by Ramthun with 16 points while Blake added 10 points. Ramthun and Wolff each had nine rebounds in the contest.

Upper Iowa was held to 37 percent (21-for-57) shooting from the field but was 10-of-24 from beyond the arc and shot 57 percent at the foul line.
