Women’s Basketball Four Game Winning Streak Snapped By William Jewell

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 77-67 loss to William Jewell on Thursday evening at the Petty Sports and Recreation Complex on the campus of Missouri Baptist. The Tritons drop to 4-2, 2-1 GLVC while the Cardinals improve to 2-5, 1-1 GLVC.

WJC shot 80 percent hitting 12-of-15 shots from the field in the first quarter while UMSL was held to 24 percent shooting as the Cardinals built a 15-point lead by the end of the quarter.

The Tritons scored the first five points of the second quarter to cut the margin to 10 but back-to-back threes from Ayden Shannon and Chloe Frank gave Jewell its largest lead of the contest with 7:04 left in the stanza. UMSL went on a 19-0 run over the next 4:40 to take a 36-33 lead on a three-pointer from Jalysa Stokes. Stokes scored 12 of the points in that run while Amaya Blake added four and Audrey Martinez-Stewart had two and Brooke Woodyard had the other.

The two sides traded baskets over the final two minutes of the half and were tied at the break.

The Cardinals opened the second half on a 7-2 run to regain the lead and wouldn't relinquish it as they outscored the Tritons 14-6 in the frame to take a 54-46 lead into the final 10 minutes.

Jewell extended its run into the fourth quarter scoring the first eight points to match its largest lead of the night on two free throws by Bree Shannon. UMSL made a run midway through the stanza to get within with less than four minutes to play in the game but wouldn't get any closer as the Cardinals outscored the Tritons 13-11 over the remainder of the contest to grab the victory.

UMSL finished the game shooting 34 percent (22-for-64) from the field including 3-of-8 from three and shot 71 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded Jewell by a 50-to-28 margin but turned the ball over 12 times to the Cardinals four. Stokes finished with 21 points and was joined in double figures by Blake with 17 points.

Jewell shot 45 percent (28-for-62) in the contest including 11-of-27 from downtown and shot 67 percent at the charity stripe. A. Shannon led four Cardinals in double figures in scoring with a game-high 27 points. Frank added 16 while B. Shannon and Emree Zars had 10 points apiece.

The Tritons conclude their three-game home stand on Saturday hosting William Jewell at 12 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
