ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team came up short in its 62-53 loss to Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons fall to 4-3, 2-2 GLVC while the Hawks improve to 2-2, 2-1 GLVC.
UMSL led early in the contest but Rockhurst battled back to take a 12-10 lead on a layup from Keegan Sullivan. The Tritons tied the game on a layup from
Alex Wolff with less than two minutes to play in the opening stanza but the Hawks got back-to-back baskets from Allison McFarren and Ali Kamies in the final 0:25 of the quarter to retake the lead.
Audrey Martinez-Stewart hit a jumper right before the end of the frame to cut the lead in half at the break.
Rockhurst opened the second quarter on a 12-5 run to build its largest lead of the half at 29-20 on a jumper from Akili Felici near the midway point of the stanza. UMSL cut the deficit to five but two free throws from McFarren gave the Hawks a seven-point lead at the break.
The Tritons pulled to within three at the 3:52 mark of the third quarter on a layup from
Emerson Weller but Rockhurst ended the frame scoring six of the final 10 points to take a 44-39 lead into the final quarter.
The Hawks stretched their lead to 10 just over three minutes into the quarter but the Tritons rallied cutting the deficit in half on a layup from Wolff with 5:18 remaining but wouldn't get any closer as Rockhurst scored nine of the final 16 points of the contest to grab the victory.
UMSL was held to 36 percent (22-for-61) shooting from the floor in the contest, was 1-of-4 from three and shot at 57 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Hawks 44-to-30 but turned the ball over 16 times.
Jalysa Stokes had 11 points in the contest while Wolff had nine points and 10 rebounds and
Morgan Ramthun added nine points as well.
Rockhurst shot 38 percent (22-for-58) from the floor including 5-of-20 from three and shot 77 percent at the charity stripe. It outscored the Tritons 18-to-6 in points off turnovers. Sullivan led three Hawks in double figures in scoring with 14 points while Kamies dropped home 12 and McFarren finished with 11.
UMSL is back in action next Thursday (Dec. 7) as they travel to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Quincy Hawks at 5:30 p.m. at Pepsi Arena.
