Baseball Drops Final Two Games at Alabama Huntsville

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at Alabama Huntsville on Saturday. The Tritons dropped the opener 8-7 on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh and then lost the nightcap 26-5. UMSL is 2-2 on the season while the Chargers are 4-3.

Game 1 – UAH 8 UMSL 7
UAH jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in its half of the first inning. Will Noles drove in the first run with a single through the left side of the infield scoring Garrett Bodine from third. Brennan Vasquez scored later in the inning on a throwing error by Ryan Berry.

The Tritons tied the game with two runs in the second. Logan Mantz drove in Leighton Keller with the first run with an infield single to second and then Bryce Kulinski drove in Jordan Aguallo with a sacrifice bunt.

UMSL took the lead scoring four runs on five hits and an error in the fourth inning. The inning started innocently as Aguallo and Mantz were retired on just three pitches. Kulinski started the rally with a double to left and then Justin Simard followed with a double to center to drive in Kulinski with the go-ahead run.

Braedon Stoakes singled to short to put runners on the corner for Carson Holin. Holin drove in both runners with a double to left to make it 5-2. After a pitching change, Laskowski singled to right to drive in Holin with the final run of the frame.

The Chargers scored three in its half of the fourth after the first two were retired and then retook the lead with a pair of runs in in the sixth.

The Tritons tied the game in the top of the seventh. Laskowski led off the inning with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Mitch Green's sacrifice fly to right.

UAH scored the winning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh. Mitchell Rottier started the inning with an infield single to second, went to second on a ground out back to the pitcher, advanced to third on a ground out to first and scored on Landon Ezzell's single to center.

Each team had 13 hits in the contest. Laskowski and Holin led UMSL with three hits each while Stoakes added a pair of hits. Adam Rose took the loss allowing a run on two hits as he pitched the final 1.2 innings.

Game 2 – UAH 26 UMSL 5
The nightcap was all Chargers as they scored in every inning highlighted by a five run fourth and a 13-run sixth inning. UAH scored twice in the first but the Tritons tied it with two in the second. The Chargers retook the lead with two in the second. UMSL cut the deficit in half with a run in the third but UAH tacked on two more in its half of the third and then scored five runs on five hits in the fourth to extend its lead to 11-4.

The Chargers added two more in the fifth before putting the game away in the sixth with 13 runs on seven hits and seven walks in the frame.

Holin accounted for two of the Tritons six hits in the nightcap. Mantz took the loss allowing six runs on seven hits in three innings pitched with a walk and a strikeout.

UMSL returns to the diamond next Friday as it travels to Claremore, Okla., to take on Rogers State in the first of a four-game series at 2 p.m.
